Conversations That Change Everything
by Dr Tori Carter
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) Dental Health Foundation works to improve access to dental care for Australians who may otherwise go without. While treatment happens in the clinic, the path to care often begins much earlier—with a conversation.
For many people, understanding how to access dental care is not straightforward. Knowing what services exist, whether they are eligible, and where to begin can be unclear. Often, reaching out starts with a simple question: “Can you help?”
The first conversation
Part of the State Coordinator role involves responding to enquiries like this from members of the public, patients, and community organisations supporting them.
These conversations usually begin with the Foundation’s programs, explaining eligibility, outlining how referrals work, and what patients can expect if they proceed.
But they don’t always end there.
In many cases, it becomes clear that the oral health system isn’t well understood. People may not know whether they are eligible for public dental services, what those services offer, or how to access them.
Helping make sense of it
While it may not sit neatly within a formal role description, these conversations often include:
- talking through what different dental care pathways might look like
- explaining public dental eligibility, costs, and locations
Taking the time to have these conversations helps people make informed decisions, whether that leads them to a Foundation program or another service that better meets their needs.
These conversations also often include basic oral health education.
People may call unsure about the urgency of their situation, or how serious their symptoms are. We find ourselves talking about:
- signs of deteriorating oral health,
- when to seek an emergency dental appointment, and
- when it may require hospital attention.
These moments help people understand their oral health and recognise when to act.
When conversations go deeper
Sometimes, they become moments where people choose to share their story. This might include experiences of hardship, or how their oral health is affecting their everyday life, confidence, and self-esteem.
These moments need to be handled with care. Often, these conversations are just the beginning of someone reconnecting with their oral health. How we respond can help them feel ready to take the next step to seek care.
There is more than one pathway for dental care
The ADA Dental Health Foundation works to support people who cannot easily access dental care, but it is not the only pathway.
The Foundation’s programs are one part of the system, sitting alongside other public and private services. For someone unfamiliar with the system, it can be difficult to know where to start.
These conversations help connect people to the options available.
Not every interaction leads to immediate care. But even brief conversations can make a difference. Understanding eligibility, knowing where to go, or recognising the need for urgent care, these are often the first steps.
Without that clarity, it is easy for people to delay or avoid seeking treatment altogether.
Shaped by need
Communication and connection are at the heart of this work.
While the Foundation’s programs are the core of what we do, the day-to-day reality is shaped by the needs of volunteers, partners, patients, and the people reaching out.
No two conversations are the same, and no single pathway fits everyone.
It isn’t just about coordinating care. It’s about listening, understanding, and helping people find the dental care pathway right for them.
Before the dental clinic
Oral health care does not start at the dental chair. It starts earlier, in the moments where people seek information, ask questions, and try to understand their options.
These moments may seem small, but they can be turning points, helping someone move from uncertainty or avoidance toward action.
When people feel heard and understood, they are more likely to engage. That first positive interaction can make it feel possible to take the next step. Sometimes, that’s all that’s needed to begin.
